Apart from the already mentioned Session Path, the FPA doesn't appear to present any other issues. I would get the session path resolved and then try again with the minor update (4.4.5 to 4.4.6 first; update channel, Default), then try the 4.4.6 > 5.1.2 migration.
Can you review the error log (as listed in FPA report: Log Errors To: /tmp/php_errors.log)? Report any errors back to the forum; the errors may give further clues as to the failure of the Joomla update from starting or displaying the pre-update check. Perhaps during this process when you try to rerun the update, you could enable Display errors, so they are immediately on screen.
